DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

It might have been a question of rain rather than reign but the celebrations on 4 June went well despite heavy showers, with more than 180 people attending. Many thanks to all who came, helped on the day and gave donations or raffle prizes. After welcoming everyone, especially visiting family and friends, Parish Council chairman John Gillett proposed the loyal toast and then presented Councillor Betty Bates with a photograph of Little Gransden church, resplendent with newly restored tower and weathercock, in recognition of her many years of service not only to the parish council but also to the church, the village hall and the community as a whole. Matthew Carter and family kindly supervised the substantial barbecue, with delicious puddings provided by Cynthia Murden and Barbara Horner, while Rodney Mitchell ensured musical entertainment of hits over the past 60 years. The rain held off while Bob Murden organized some races and tug of war, and presented commemorative medals to the winners. Freda Adlington presented commemorative mugs to the children. After tea, made by Phyllis Jaquest and Betty Bates, it rained again so many settled down to watch a DVD of the Queen’s 60-year reign. Kevin Diss took a splendid group photograph.
